Grevillea pinaster ‘Silk Carpet’
APPEARANCE : Ground cover form of a WA native grevillea with fine slender foliage; pinkish-red rounded flowers with long lime-green-yellow tips appear on the end of the stems during spring and occasionally at other times of the year.
ORIGIN : G pinaster is a WA species found on clay soils along the coast from Perth to Shark Bay
USE FOR : Native and wildlife gardens. Coastal gardens. Ground cover to retain soil and moisture, suppress weeds, hold banks together, keep roots of larger plants cool in summer or warm in winter. Looks good cascading down a bank or over a retaining wall.
CLIMATE: Tolerates frost once established.
PLANTING: Prefers full sun to part shade in free-draining soil. This grevillea should be able to tolerate alkaline soils, unlike many other grevilleas, so test its pH resilience. Also happy growing in clay unlike other grevilleas. The parent species has vigorous roots so avoid planting this one too near pipes.
CARE: Water during the first 8-12 weeks until the plant is established. Prune after flowering to keep it neat and dense. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form – grevilleas can be phosphorus-sensitive so the P ratio of the fertiliser needs to be under 3%.
